We love our mothers everyday, but tomorrow is a day of national appreciation to those ladies who dealt with us
nurtured us into the wildly adjusted individuals we are today. There
are plenty of sparkly (and not so sparkly) pieces here in the studio you
could pick up as a gift, or you could give the gift of a workshop where
she could learn to make her own jewellery. You could pick up some
flowers or take her to her favourite restaurant, or do all the house
work and leave her to solitude. But, I think the best kind of mothers
day gift is just plain old fashioned love. I think Wendy Darling said it
best…

Hiya everyone!

I am just completing my first week of interning here at Jewel Envy, and about to start my very first blog post ever. I guess it’s time I introduce myself as the newest member of the Jewel Envy team! 🙂

My name is Taylor Norman and I have just finished two years out of three in the Jewellery Arts program at George Brown College. My education so far at George Brown has been incredible and I have learned so much, but the one think I felt was missing towards the end of second year was real-world experience. That is why I jumped at the opportunity to apply to become Jewel Envy’s summer intern when the posting went up around our studios!

I have always had an interest in running my own business, but the thought of trying to start up a studio with only a few years of knowledge and literally no experience was totally terrifying for me. Gillian (owner of Jewel Envy and entrepreneur extraordinaire) has so far been an incredible mentor and teacher (and it’s only been a week!!!)

Today, I’m learning how to gold plate! I can’t wait for what I will learn over the course of this summer!

It’s the time of the year for OCAD’s grad show. I still remember how excited and nervous I was to show everyone what I had been working on for a year back in the days. It was a good memory. I can’t wait to see  awesome jewellery art created by thesis students. Come support and get inspired! The opening night is on May 3rd and it will be on till Sunday from May 4th to May 6th.

Just a word to let you know about a new exhibit at Jewel Envy.

This new show is entitled ‘New Life’ and is perfectly themed for springtime (cold weather notwithstanding).  Fifteen past and present Jewel Envy will showcase their handmade and extremely fabulous pieces, each one a unique interpretation of new beginnings.

Please come by and join us for the opening reception on Friday May 3rd, from 5 – 10pm.  If you cannot make it for the opening, the exhibit will be on display for the duration of the month of May.

Yes, I know, it’s still freezing outside but technically it will be spring on Wednesday. On top of the weather warming up, flowers blooming and choices in fashion expanding away from a parka and boots, it’s the One of a Kind Spring Show and Sale!

There’s certain pieces of jewellery that are quite definitive in pop culture. Like the “Heart of the Ocean” necklace in Titanic, or that gigantic diamond collar Nicole Kidman’s character Satine wears in Moulin Rouge. Today I was thinking about a more subtle piece of jewellery in pop culture and, being a traditional Irish symbol of love, kind of goes with the month of March and St. Patrick’s day coming up next week.
Anyone who knows me knows I am a diehard Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. Any chance I get to talk about Buffy I welcome with great excitement. I grew up with the show, premiering in 1996 when I was just 11 years old and probably had no business watching such a scarey program. But something in the dark comedic stylings of Joss Whedon grabbed hold of me and never let go.
Another one of Joss’s writing talents is a tragic romance of epic proportions. A slayer and a vampire in love? Oh yes, and that vampire was the most ruthless vicious vampire of all time and some gypsies cursed him with a soul so he would suffer for all of eternity! There were tears, there action packed fights, there were moments where our hearts skipped a beat, and there was the time Angel gave Buffy this:
