8 Week Intro to Fabrication Projects

Last week I finished up the last 8 week intro to fab class that I will teach at Jewel Envy. I know *tear*. It was such a great group to work with, couldn’t have asked for a nicer for enthusiastic group of girls. They all did a really great job with their projects so I want to share them with you.
Here’s what they made. Be proud of yourselves ladies. Enjoy!

Seeing Circles

You’ve heard of seeing stars, well, I’m seeing circles. Today, to catch up some missed hours ( thank you winter blues), I have been working since ten this morning. It’s not at all bad, in fact I’ve had a great day. The only downside is that after cutting so many circles in wax I now see circles everywhere I look. These little green wax circles don’t look like much yet but they’re destined  be itty bitty, delicate flowers in just about any metal you could ask for. They could be part of earnings, pendant, bracelets, rings. So much potential all with a diameter under 6mm. This is why I spend  many hours here. Even the tiniest little steps, repeated over and over until you see circles become beautiful when put together. It’s so calming too. Gives me a chance to let my mind wander, listen to podcasts and talk to our wonderful goldsmiths.

ROCK SOME CUSTOM ROCKS

So you guys know we LOVE doing custom work here at Jewel Envy, right? If you have ever thought of getting something made for you or a loved one, but didn’t know where to start, let me help point you in an interesting direction:)
Here at the studio, we have a selection of beautiful and unusual gemstones, that are just begging to be put to good use.
Here are a few of them:
This is amolite. What a beautiful shimmery colour! Absolutely perfect for spring. This would be amazing as the focal point of a necklace, but it would also make your friends green with envy (sorry, had to do it!) as a large and in-charge cocktail ring.

Smithsonite. It reminds me of sea glass, though this is actually zinc. It makes me think of the beach, and it would look perfect against a backdrop of a sunkissed tan!:)
Watermelon Tourmaline. So so so juicy and the perfect embodiment of summer picnics and fireworks in the park. These two beauties would be absolutely stunning as a matched pair of earrings, don’t you think?!
These beautiful gemstones really give life and personality to your design – their not-so-standard shapes and spectacular colours are a great starting point for an entirely original and one-of-a-kind piece.
Have a great and sunny day!

Judith’s introduction

I would like to introduce myself as a goldsmith at Jewel Envy.
This studio is just a great workplace with a lot of interesting people
and my work will be on display tomorrow.

I apprenticed in Germany with a master jeweller and graduated at School for Fine Arts in
Hamburg, Germany. Then worked  free lance for several studios and galleries.

As a new immigrant I worked in the jewellery industry in Toronto for 10 years.
Now I am self employed, doing custom orders and creating my own line.

Talk to you soon!

Spring is in the air!

Well, it’s officially spring. (Although if you live on the east coast you’d never know it!)

With the warmer weather people start thinking about romantic ways to propose to their sweethearts. If you’re unsure of what to do, I recommend a picnic, but wait until the April showers are over! That means there is plenty of time to have a special engagement ring made. Here at Jewel Envy, we specialize in extraordinary designs and meaningful custom work. If you are having a hard time deciding how to turn your idea into a ring, come on in and talk to one of the goldsmiths. We will take care of you, and make sure that you propose with the perfect ring that you’ll both cherish forever.

Here are a few engagement rings that you’ll find in store.

Sweet and dainty engagement ring by Amanda Henderson of Jewelust

Classic bezel design by Lauren Hanham Designs.

Classic bezel setting with linear details by Sasha Oda of Archerade.

Like the design of a ring in the store, but want to customize the stones and metal? We can do that!

White gold and blue topaz ring by Sasha Oda of Archerade

Or maybe you want a completely new and unique design, like your beloved? We can do that too!

White gold branch ring made by Amanda Henderson of Jewelust.

I hope I’ve given you some ideas. If you just have questions about all of the options out there (and we know, there’s a lot and it can be overwhelming!), just give us a call or stop in and we’ll give you our advice and share our knowledge.

Happy spring!
Amanda

P.S. To all of our friends still shoveling snow, I’m sending you sunny thoughts.

Let me introduce myself!

Well hello there! I should introduce myself, I’m the new intern here at Jewel Envy and my name’s Linnea. I’m here from 1-6pm Tuesdays,Thursdays and Fridays and occasionally Wednesday mornings so feel free to say hi if you stop by, though I am kept pretty busy.
So, a bit about me. I love all kinds of art, especially jewellery, since a young age. I’ve taken short classes in wire jewellery, casting, gem cutting, setting and chain designs. I have a particular love of Celtic and Norse inspiration but anything that shines or sparkles makes my day.
While working here I will post on the blog, do updates behind-the-scenes and help out the goldsmiths with some of the in-between steps like filing and emerying which takes a long time but is actually one of my favourite parts of the process.
That’s all for now, -Linnea

Burn baby burn!

So I dropped some very very hot wax on my arm the other day. It is not a big deal in the grand scheme of potential-goldsmith-injuries, but it is a bit of an eyesore:
 ouch!
So what is a goldsmith to do? Cover it up with jewellery of course! Big and bold bracelets are the perfect disguise, and here is the proof:
(L-R) Arrowhead bracelet in sterling, Archerade by Sasha Oda
Open studded cuff in sterling, Jewelust by Amanda Henderson
Twig cuff in sterling and gold plate, Pash by Gillian Batcher
Wrap bracelet in sterling, Tete Designs by Fatima Tataragic
If delicate is more your thing, we also have a great selection of dainty bracelets that are beautiful and intricate distractions from any offensive scar tissue:)
(T-B) Plain and hammered bangles in sterling, HP Lafaurie Jewelry Design by Helena Lafaurie
Paisley links and cherry blossom bracelets in sterling, Koko Bijoux by Young Kyoung Ko
Lotus charm bracelet with sapphires in sterling, Ellolite by Chia-Chien Tsai
Open shapes bracelet with moonstone beads in sterling, Glaciale by Alexis Kostuk

Obviously you can arm yourself even if uninjured, so come on by today and try on some bracelets!
We are open until 6pm tonight, you can help me put some aloe on my burn.

18K
rose and yellow gold ring came back for a visit. Its owner’s knuckles
are bigger than her finger, so we added a few balls to the inside to
make it fit tighter on the finger but still fit over the knuckle. We
also made an 18K rose and white gold bracelet to complete the look!

Craigslist surprise

Hi guys!
This is my story about an interesting incident that happened last week, during my search for the perfect display case. (The display case is a story unto itself, so if you want to know more about that just let me know.)
I have been obsessively searching through Craigslist and Kijiji, because I am/was on the hunt for a display cabinet, a showcase for my jewellery, that can travel with me to sales/shows/events. My search words were exactly this: “jewellery display cabinet”. Scrolling down, my eyes were suddenly transfixed by this image:
I was so perplexed to see this pendant ‘for sale’ on Craigslist, that I stared blankly at the screen for a silly amount of time. It is a necklace that I made in my last year of the Jewellery Arts program at George Brown, that was subsequently displayed during our grad show event. But to see this piece completely out of context, after years of being apart, was a bit of a surprise. And then I realized that it was an ad for Jewel Envy, using a provided-by-me image no less, and then I was no longer surprised.
I am telling you this because it was a good moment; to reflect on past work, and to realize that although my style has evolved, the backbone of my goldsmithing esthetic has stayed true. I am still very happy with this design, and the same cannot always be said about my other creations (my self-critic has a loud voice!) But in the end my design professor knew her stuff – with the right amount (usually a HUGE amount) of ideation, development, and refinement, you will be able to create a piece that will stand the test of time. Lesson learned, again!
So back to the sketchbook I go, and I will leave you with a proper image of the above piece:
Burst pendant – sterling silver with 14k yellow gold accent
custom-cut sujilite cabochon
sterling silver rolo chain
Happy designing y’all!
