Shine Bright Like a Diamond

Hi,  I am Jerell Reichert.  I am a designer/goldsmith at Jewel Envy. I am also a Gemologist, FCGMA – Fellow of the Canadian Gemological Association.

While most people at this time of the year think about The Superbowl and its commercials I think about Tucson. I lived in Scottsdale Arizona for ten years.  Late January and early February, buyers and sellers converge on Arizona for the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Tucson Gem and Mineral Society (established in 1946) has been the host to the show since 1955. It has become the largest show of its kind in the world. There are over 50 individual venues and 3,000 + vendors. The AGTA –American Gem Trader and the GJX- Gem and Jewellery Exchange open Monday after Superbowl.  These shows are strictly wholesale while others are open to the public.

Vegas, Hong Kong, Basel, and Miami have major jewellery shows, which are also wholesale or to the trade and concentrate on finished jewellery and watches. While, Tucson is focused on designers and makers who are looking for materials to incorporate into their jewellery.

So you might be wondering if smaller jewellers have access to the same material as large manufacturers. The truth is custom jewellers can incorporate materials that are in short supply while large companies have to standardize their offering, and there might not be enough material to roll out an entire line. Unlike clothing, where fabric can be manufactured, once the mineral deposits from a mine are used up… they are gone. Designers from Jewel Envy attend the same shows as designers from major jewellery brands and because our lines are produced in short runs we can offer more unusual options for materials than a larger brand may be able to offer.

For example-  I purchased Sleeping Beauty Turquoise briolets 15 years ago for a special piece for a special client — my mother.  It is  a distinct robins’s egg blue, almost  free from webbing and veining inclusions. The  Sleeping Beauty mine in Globe Arizona is now depleted. It takes a long time for major companies to get materials through the supply chain — from when they bought the material to when it reaches the market. I saw the same turquoise used by a major brand 13 years after I first saw it at the show.

How do I know it is the same material :  I saw the owner of the major brand at my supplier.

Did you know that you can wear Barbie?

Just over a week ago Barbie announced it’s line up of new dolls. I’ve never had a strong connection with Barbie or dolls in general. It was a hard won struggle for my mom to get me into a dress and regular doll play was never a part of my imaginative realm as a kid. However, as I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and the news popped up I did a momentary pause to appreciate the dolls varied appearances and thinking to myself that Mattel is finally getting something right.

If remembering your Barbie playtime has you nostalgic there is a great way to incorporate Barbie into your wardrobe…

SIDENOTE: I might not have been a huge fan of Barbie as a girl, but I am a RABID fan of Margaux Lange’s use of Barbies in her jewellery.

One of Margaux’s pieces is going to be worn by Samantha Bee on her Late Show Full Frontal. As Magaux remarked in her Instagram post, “Feels kind of appropriate and awesome that my work will be seen on the first and only late night show hosted by a woman.”

Keep an eye out for Samantha Bee wearing the Leg Lapel Pin. You can also contact Margaux to get one of your own!

Little pieces of me extend all over, bringing me joy!

I have been doing a lot of custom work lately and it’s made me reflect a little about my career choice. I absolutely love coming up with my own designs and seeing them come to life in finished pieces of jewellery. Yet there is something special about meeting with someone and sharing the process of how I design and create to then bring one of their ideas to life. The sharing of personal details is intimate and a bond is formed over this process.

Often people don’t think they are conveying enough detail when we meet to design something for them but there is more that goes into a design than just what you tell the artist. There are many nuances captured in how you speak, what you are wearing, and how you describe how you want to wear a piece of jewellery. Over time one learns to read between the lines to flush out each customer and what is important to them in the design.

This personal side of custom jewellery is what deeply appeals to me. Jewellery is meant to be treasured and seemingly in juxtaposition to our other acquired treasures, also worn. We bond with our jewellery just as we bond as a customer and maker. When a treasure I have created leaves the studio a little piece of me goes to a new home and in that act my work starts a new journey, one I can daydream about and feel proud to have been a part of. Little pieces of me exist all over, making my artistic heart soar!

Her work is always inspiring with bold design elements, and this ring shows it!
Her bold patterns and gorgeous mounted gems are definite statement pieces for any occasion!

Her works also tell stories. such as this incredible piercework piece!
Micheline has an incredible selection of bold, colourful, contemporary jewelry that reflect her personality and abilities: I’m so glad to have met her!
Hope to see you soon!

Hey-hey-Hyewon!!!

Hyewon Jang
This is Hyewon, a wonderful goldsmith who works out of Jewel Envy.
The following are all pieces from her Africa collection:
I love the contrast between the bold asymmetrical shapes, and the delicate colour of the stones. Plus, these stud earrings look like exclamation points don’t they!!!!!!!

The bright pop of colour at the bottom of these stepping stone earrings is just perfect. They’d look great with a black turtleneck in the winter, or a white t-shirt in the summer, amirite?!
Yet another great pair of earrings, with bold, asymmetrical detail and pretty pearls at the bottom. These tie in very nicely with a lot of other pieces that Hyewon makes, as she is very fond of pearls:)

Bet you thought it would be another pair of earrings! Nope, just the cutest lil’ pendant ever.
All Hyewon’s work is just as beautiful. Her pieces are delicate and strong at the same time, and she likes to play with shape and form in surprising ways. Gemstones and pearls add just the right amount of colour, and her work is always the perfect way to add ooh-la-la to any outfit. Come in and take a look!

New year, new plans, new dreams!

Welcome to 2016 everyone! If you know me personally, you know I am a planner so when I started to dream up things to come for this year I had a huge to-do list. That’s how I like to start a new year, with a long list of ideas and dreams that can get distilled into a shorter version of the best ones to implement.

Now it’s not just up to me what happens here in a year as we work collaboratively in this studio environment so having all of the jewellers on board for the plans makes them much more successful. To allow us to work this way we hold regular studio meetings where everyone’s input is heard and considered. This may seem like a radical idea for a business to choose to use a collective style without officially being one, but it is a method I strongly believe in and have stuck to since opening. I choose to work with creative people, so I think creative voices should have the opportunity to do what they do best, which is to dream.

2016 will be Jewel Envy’s tenth year in business and boy has it grown over time. It started as a small two person business and has grown to include around a dozen goldsmiths at any one time. As we ramp up to a big 10 year anniversary party near the end of the year we will be holding special events throughout the year to celebrate our customers who have made it possible to not just survive all of these years but to thrive and grow with you.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us and continues to so. Wishing all of you an amazing 2016 full of realized dreams this year!

This weeks spotlight jeweller is Tammy McClennan!

Tammy’s work uses a combination of traditional metalsmithing techniques which she combines with some more industrial processes. She creates sculptural geometric pieces that are hollow and then instead of traditional metal finishing used in jewellery she powder coats them in her chosen colour palette.

If you are not familiar with powder coating, think big, like how cars are painted, your bicycle, and really most purchased painted metal objects!

What I find the most fascinating with this work is her integration of the findings (the parts that allow you to put on the necklaces and secure them in place. Hers are made specifically for her work and are simple enough to fabricate yet complex in how she worked them seamlessly into the design.

The clasp is a piece if tubing that a thick metal wire slots into. The geometric pieces sit on the tubing and are interchangeable amongst the necklaces. The actual necklace is steel cable further adding to the industrial look. Although the necklaces are large they are in fact light because they are hollow.

Next time you are in the store b sure to give these pieces a look and try them on!

Until my next entry,

Happy accessorizing!

Kris Ruhs

Shortly before the holidays I took off for Milan, Italy. Of my many city stops I checked out 10 Corso Como a concept store – gallery, cafe, shop, book store all rolled into one. They had some amazing Kris Ruhs jewellery on display (and for sale). A renaissance man – painter, sculptor, installation artist, jewellery maker; I love seeing the crossover of an artist’s work across disciplines – check out the links and the pics to feast your eyes out. – Alexis

Wrapping up 2015!

Hello,

This will be one of the last posts of 2015 from us as we near Christmas and the stores closes for a few days to reopen in 2016. I thought I would take a few moments to reflect on what a wonderful year it has been for us here. It has been a year of welcoming new members to the space, exhibitions, and a dramatic increase in class enrollment. The studio has had a few scheduled upgrades to equipment and the building has also benefited from further exterior landscaping.

We have now been at 151 Marion St for just over 3 years and are an established part of Roncesvalles with directions being given as either north or south of the blue house. As a space that prides itself on genuine community connections we have supported many local fundraisers and installed a Little Free Library. Our LFL fosters a love of reading which helps cultivate curiosity and imagination; two very important ingredients in supporting the arts in all forms.

One of our members left for maternity leave while another is preparing for motherhood while continuing to work. As with every new year there is a feeling of hope and anticipation for what is to come. We know as a team we can rise to any occasion and have big plans to roll out over the next year. We are deeply thankful for the support we have received from each other, our loved ones, and you our customers.

Our wish for everyone in 2016 is to find joy and satisfaction in life, which is exactly how we feel when we see something we laboured over find a new and loving home with one of you. We hope to be able to continue to share in your special moments as these become part of our memories of the joys to look for in life.

There are only a few more days until Christmas so if we don’t see you in the store before then for last minute pick ups we hope to see you in the new year!

Love, peace, and joy to all,

Gillian

Hello Judith!!!

Judith Noldin is a resident goldsmith here at Jewel Envy. She makes incredibly unique and beautiful pieces, and is also a whiz at doing repairs! I highly recommend stopping by to take a look at what she has going on, you will not be disappointed.

Here she is, hard at work on another repair:
Here are some of my favourite pieces. The far left is part of the Turrets Collection. I love the cutout detailing, and of course, the 18K yellow gold accent isn’t too bad either! She has other similar pieces as well, with coloured glass instead of gold. The shape of the turrets is inspired by church steeples, and they definitely make me think of medieval architecture. The middle pendant is a lovely and serene mother-of-pearl face, with a pretty moony surprise on the back for you, as well. The brooch on the right is made of coloured, textured glass, and sterling silver.

Come in and say hi to Judith!
