Goldsmiths – A journey through time!

Hey everyone, Jessica here! I figured a snowy Saturday seems like a good time to take you on a journey through time in the art and history of the Goldsmith.

Goldsmithing is the practice of working with gold and other precious metals to create objects of adornment, especially jewellery. Goldsmiths have existed ever since gold itself was determined to be of value. We have seen the products of goldsmiths all throughout history in utensils, ceremonial and religious items, talismans, jewelry and art.

A Goldsmith possesses the knowledge and ability to forge, solder, cut, cast, file, and polish metal – just to name a few skills of a potentially much longer list! Historically, these skills were typically passed down within family and under apprenticeship. Although apprenticeship is still a common practice today, there are now many jewelry arts programs available throughout various schools around the world.

According to Bulgarian archeologists, the oldest known gold artifact is a gold bead discovered under a small house of a prehistoric settlement outside of Pazardzhik – the bead is said to date back 6500 years!

Check out these images below of goldsmiths through different eras – and be sure to visit us at 151 Marion Street, Toronto to see what the goldsmiths of today are creating at Jewel Envy!

Forgotten History of Female Scribes

I
will forever be obsessed with lapis lazuli. No matter what gemstones I
come across I am always drawn the most to anything blue. A while back I
posted interesting facts about gemstones
including that lapis lazuli was ground into powder to create
ultramarine blue paint pigment… the colour was so beautiful and
coveted that lapis lazuli was worth it’s weight in gold.

YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT THIS ARTICLE about a recent study analyzing the plaque on the teeth of remains found at a women’s monastery in Dalheim, Germany. Check out the article about the implications of this study and an exciting avenue for sociology and archealogy, what a ride!

make you shine, and you will feel beautiful.
The hat and the scarf keep you warm, but a great pair of earrings are the magic touch to make you feel unique!

of winters ago, big pearls, shine little diamonds, all I needed to make
my winter less cold and sunnier!

making your own cookie cutters

When time for a holiday break rolls around I start thinking about what I can be making if I am not at my jeweller’s bench making jewellery. A few weekends ago I set aside time to make a couple hundred pierogies to freeze for holiday get-togethers and I’ll be making meat sticks soon.
After watching The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell on Netflix in October I have got it in my head that I want to make a gingerbread house.

Christine McConnell and her gingerdead house.
I have started my scheme to create a winter gingerbread house starting with a list of materials I need and creating a cardboard template. I don’t even want to eat the gingerbread – which is surprising for someone who likes cookies as much as I do. I am looking forward to the hours I will use creating something elaborate. It has occurred to me that family and friends might be bummed if I do not want them to break off parts of my gingerbread house, so I want to throw a custom cookie shape into the mix as well. I came across a great and simple tutorial. I will have to snap some pics of my cookie cutter progress, because I think I will make them a bit differently (my La Croix cans will make beautiful cutters ;o)
https://mylovelyfrench.wordpress.com/2012/09/16/diy-homemade-cookie-cutters/

I’m thinking of making a Rose shaped cookie (Rose as in the muppet character from Christine McConnell’s show, just below). If you have any other ideas, let me know! Are there any family treats or eats that you love to make?

-Alexis

Hello Dear Sunday Readers,

The most incredible holiday of the year is only one month away, Christmas!

Time
to extend Peace, Love, Joy, Happiness and much more to all.  A time to
share with family and friends.
One of the many things we do at Christmas
is to show our love and appreciation to the most important people in
our lives.

This year some of my costumers had asked me to make some lovely presents for their friends and family.

To
begin with this cuff-links in Sterling Silver made with Hong Kong coins,
and the second pair in Sterling Silver and Agates. Cuff links are a great
present for any occasion, and even more as a Christmas present.
